Today, I’m talking about ten hearing loss symptoms to watch for.  Hearing loss may remain undetected for years.  Why struggle to understand what people are saying?  Especially if you can benefit from all the many technological advances in today’s latest hearing aids?

Hearing Loss Symptoms

People with hearing loss may report the following symptoms:

  • You can hear but don’t understand what people are saying.
  • People mumble too much and don’t speak clearly.
  • You have constant buzzing or ringing in the ears.
  • You have difficulty hearing in noisy places.
  • People say you’re a loud talker.
  • You frequently ask others to repeat themselves.
  • You are overly sensitive to loud sounds.
  • You avoid social situations and group conversations.
  • You struggle to understand when talking on the phone.
  • You feel like conversation takes considerable effort to understand and are exhausted and frustrated by it.

Hearing loss is more common than you think.  Approximately 37.5 million U.S. adults age 18 and older report some trouble hearing.  About 28.8 million U.S. adults could benefit from hearing aids.*

Hearing Loss Care

So, who should you see about your hearing?  Many different clinics may provide hearing screenings.  Often, the first time people mention concern about their hearing is to a primary care physician (PCP).  Your physician can make a referral to an audiologist for a hearing exam, or you can contact an audiology clinic directly to schedule an appointment.  An audiologist (Doctor of Audiology or Au.D.) is uniquely qualified to comprehensively evaluate your hearing and make recommendations for hearing aids if needed.

Hearing Loss – Medical Evaluation

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends consultation with a physician and/or Ear Nose and Throat doctor (ENT doctor) for the following conditions before dispensing a hearing aid. **

  • Visible congenital or traumatic deformity of the ear.
  • History of active drainage from the ear within the previous 90 days.
  • History of sudden or rapidly progressive hearing loss within the previous 90 days.
  • Acute or chronic dizziness.
  • Unilateral hearing loss of sudden or recent onset within the previous 90 days.
  • Audiometric air-bone gap equal to or greater than 15 decibels at 500 hertz (Hz), 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz.
  • Visible evidence of significant cerumen accumulation or a foreign body in the ear canal.
  • Pain or discomfort in the ear.

If you are experiencing any of these conditions as outlined by the FDA, make sure to contact your physician today for an evaluation.  If you have any sudden changes in hearing or onset of dizziness, this should be addressed immediately by your local physician.
